The Mobile Media Collaboration Course
The communication arts department at the Lebanese International University debuted A collaboration program with the media communications department at the Webster University in Leiden the Netherlands. The project was initiated to combine professional experience, promote interactivity in video making, and to build and strengthen synergies between the two universities.
Consequently, this collaborative approach was designed to encourage and enhance student’s knowledge and comprehensive education in skill and practices to achieve proficiency in video podcasting (online broadcast). Believing that alternative teaching is the tool to deliver knowledge to students, the program brought together experienced production experts and Radio & TV students from LIU and Webster University, who made this collaboration possible. Hassan Choubassi and Julian scaff combined their skills and experiences to instill knowledge in video production into 8 students from LIU and 8 students from Webster University through the common course “mobile media RATV316" which is scheduled to run until May 9, 2010. This exclusive preplanned course is an exploration of new video technologies involving digital photography and portable video production, post-production and broadcast. It is a study of streaming media for distribution on "hand-held" devices, "vidcasts" or "Podcast". In order to broaden this interdependency, The Dutch students visited Beirut for 10 days on March 31, where they stayed in LIU / Beirut campus and worked closely with LIU students.

In the aim to encourage peer to peer involvement and team participation, students from both universities were paired up and completed an assigned podcast project “video mapping of Beirut”. Subsequently, LIU students are scheduled to visit Leiden for 10 days on April 30, where they will work with their fellow colleagues to complete a podcast project “video map of Leiden”. Additional lectures will be given to students by Manual Mindreau from Sotheby’s Art institute London. In addition, to the lectures given by guest artists, Andrew Fundingsland at Zico house about the “yes man group”. Marwan Richmaoui, Visual Artist gave a lecture on “mapping Beirut”and Tony Chakar, Architect/Artist gave a lecture on catastrophic spaces. Students received comprehensive methods in the skills of video production, from introductions, photo flipbook assignment, readings, to skyping, blogging, micro hd cam workshop, final cut express workshop. Including, lecture on microphotography, microcinema, micronarratives, workshops on mobile media literacy and future trends, as well as editing and montage for microcinema, skyping and blogging, workshop on xml coding and video compression codecs. This project has created a highly collaborated environment and provided LIU and Webster students with hands-on training, where it made it possible to prepare them for the workplace through projects and practical experience.
